As much as young Melville and Manjiro dreamed of adventure, they were both desperate to find a livelihood that would enable them to help support their families. Each boy found the solution by pushing off to sea aboard a whaling ship, and would ultimately dive head-first into each other’s dangerous and exotic worlds—never imagining that the wake of their plunge would still lap at history’s feet today.
